Start with the child, not only the age label
Age guidance can be useful, but children of the same age may have different interests, sensitivities and attention spans. Think about what your child understands, enjoys and finds overwhelming.
Check the pace and presentation
For younger children, look for clear images, understandable speech and enough time to notice what is happening. Watch for sudden sounds, rapid scene changes or instructions that may be hard to follow.
Match the purpose
Choose an active song when it is time to move, a quiz for shared play or a calm video before a quieter activity. Content that works well after breakfast may not be the best choice just before bed.
Preview unfamiliar videos
A quick adult preview helps you check tone, language, advertising and whether the topic matches your family's expectations. Read the title and description, then scan the beginning, middle and end.
Notice the response
Look beyond whether a child stays still. Are they singing, answering, asking questions or becoming frustrated? Their response helps you decide whether to continue, pause for a conversation or choose something else.
Remember: every child responds differently. Stop or switch activities if the content feels confusing, upsetting or overstimulating.
